We declined the Poppadoms 50p and Pickle Tray £1.50. We also turned down their second attempt to sell us an alcoholic drink… we'd had our quota at our "waiting area" - The Concertina Band Club in neighbouring Mexborough. They then tried us with non-alcoholic drinks… full marks for trying!
The music was a tad intrusive. Occasionally, thunder could be heard overhead. No, no; I must correct myself - they were testing the wedding/banqueting rooms (located upstairs) music system out… very annoying!
We were in the restaurant for a couple of hours and only 3 or 4 of the other tables saw business - the recession must be really biting hard! I've noted these last few months, that restaurants are very, very quiet; sometimes, empty!
The starters were poor:
Onion Bhajis £2.50 - Stodgy and bland. Flat bottomed (strange shaped, as if they had been sat on a baking tray, awaiting cooking), not crispy, not spicy.
Seekh Kebab £3.20 - Bought in, bland and heavy. The uniformity of the densely packed meat betraying their origin.
The main dishes were better:
Punjabi Chicken £7.50 - "Cooked with onions, peppers, tomatoes, fenugreek leaves, garlic, ginger & fresh chillies." said the menu.
Chicken Shashlik £8.50 - Chicken Tikka served on a sizzler with an accompanying fried rice (enough for 2 if you have a bread each as well) a sauce and a salad.
Plain Naan £2.00 - somewhat flat but managed the job at hand.
Roti £1.50 - both the Naan and Roti were of the same uniformed size, strange. It's as if a cut out template had been used.
There were no Indian desserts:
I don't count Kulfi as an Indian dessert.
The main dishes were of good quality. The sauce accompanying the Chicken Shashlik was a strange one. I'm not sure that the Punjabi dish contained the full range of ingredients, it seemed to be missing a couple of the key ones.
If I was to return, then I'd skip the starters as they were particularly weak. It's another typical South Yorkshire Indian Restaurant.
To be honest, I'd make the short (1.4mile) journey to Balti Palace at Denaby.
An enjoyable main course - but, once again… I came away feeling as if I hadn't been curried!
